Can AI build a website for my business? How to use an AI website builder
Yes. An AI website builder can turn a short description of your business into a draft site in under an hour, and most let you start free. But the draft is only a starting point: you must correct every fact, connect a domain you own, and check the site works for every visitor before you publish.

Before you start
- What you need: a one-page fact sheet (services, prices, service area, hours, contact details, license numbers), your own photos and logo, and a domain name you control. Most builders need a paid plan to connect your own domain.
- Cost (list prices checked 2026-10-24): $0 to try. Paid plans for a simple site run about $10 to $29 a month, and many headline prices assume you pay a year or more up front. A domain is often free for year one with an annual plan, then renews at the standard rate. A chat assistant for copy is optional; Claude Pro, for example, is $20 a month.
Step by step
1. Plan your pages and content first
List the 4 to 6 pages you need, usually Home, Services, About, Reviews or Work, and Contact. Under each, note the one action a visitor should take (call, book, request a quote).
AI fills gaps with plausible guesses, so the fewer gaps you leave, the less you fix later.
2. Choose your route: AI builder, or chat assistant plus a builder
- AI site builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Hostinger, Framer, GoDaddy Airo, Durable): you type a prompt and it builds pages, layout and text at once. Fastest.
- Chat assistant plus a template: an assistant drafts the copy from your fact sheet and you paste it into a normal template. Slower, but you control every word and the copy stays in your own document.
Read the builder's export rules before you pay (see "Use it safely").
3. Generate the draft
Paste your fact sheet into the builder's prompt, naming your service area, main services and the action you want visitors to take. Generate two or three versions and keep the best layout. With a chat assistant, ask for one page at a time and tell it to use only the facts you supplied.
Wix's help center says its AI builder only creates new sites, and an AI-generated site can't be switched to a regular template later.
4. Review and correct every page
Read each page next to your fact sheet and fix anything untrue:
- Facts, prices and hours: AI often invents "starting at" prices, hours and years in business.
- Licenses and insurance: list only what you hold, with correct numbers.
- Claims: remove "award-winning" or "#1" unless you can prove it.
- Reviews: delete any the builder made up. Use only real customer reviews.
- Photos: every photo of your team, premises or work must really be yours.
- Hidden text: page titles, meta descriptions and alt text. Google says these need the same fact-check.
Have a second person read it too. For a fuller checklist, see How do I know if AI is right?.
5. Check accessibility and speed
The U.S. Department of Justice says the ADA applies to goods and services businesses offer on the web. As of October 2026 there is still no DOJ web rule for private businesses; its guidance is dated March 18, 2022. (DOJ's rule for state and local governments now has compliance dates of April 26, 2027 and April 26, 2028.) The W3C's "Easy Checks" catch the common problems:
- Meaningful images have alt text.
- Headings are real headings, in order.
- Text contrast is at least 4.5:1 for normal text.
- Text can be enlarged without being cut off.
- Menus, buttons and forms work with a keyboard alone.
- Form fields have labels; videos have captions.
Then run your home and contact pages through Google's PageSpeed Insights, which reports mobile and desktop performance plus basic accessibility checks. Shrink large photos if it flags them.
6. Connect a domain you own
Register the domain in your business's name, with an email address you'll keep, and turn on auto-renew. ICANN says registrants must keep contact details accurate and can move a domain to another registrar, with limits: a registrar may refuse a transfer within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer, and a change of registrant can trigger a 60-day transfer lock (you can opt out). After expiry there is a 30-day redemption period, and registrars may charge to recover the name. ICANN is considering a shorter 30-day lock, with no date set (as of Oct 24, 2026).
Read "free domain" terms. Wix's voucher covers a new Wix domain redeemed within 60 days of a first Premium purchase; Squarespace's free year renews at its standard rate.
7. Publish and test like a customer
Publish, then use the site on your phone. Submit every form and confirm the message arrives. Tap the phone, email, map and booking links.
8. Update it and keep a copy
Check prices, hours, offers and photos monthly. Keep your page text and photos in a folder you control, and repeat step 4 whenever AI rewrites a page. One Wix user reported that AI revised their blog posts without approval, with no earlier version to restore. A copy outside the builder protects you.
Use it safely
Don't paste into any AI tool: customer lists, staff details, passwords, payment details or health information. A website draft never needs them. For privacy settings, see Is ChatGPT safe for business data?.
Search. Google says AI content is fine if it's accurate and useful, but mass-producing low-value pages can break its scaled content abuse policy. In a December 2025 SitePoint thread, an owner said their site vanished from search after publishing reworded AI articles; replies blamed thin content, not AI itself. Write about what you actually do, where, and for whom.
Disclosure. Google suggests explaining how automation was used where readers would wonder. Google Merchant Center requires AI-generated product titles and descriptions to be labeled.
Reviews. The FTC's fake-review rule bans fake testimonials, including AI-generated ones from people who don't exist.
Ownership. The U.S. Copyright Office says AI output is protected only where a person adds enough creative expression; prompts alone don't count.
Lock-in. Portability varies:
- Wix says sites can't be hosted anywhere except Wix.
- Framer says it doesn't offer HTML export for self-hosting.
- Squarespace exports some content to a WordPress-format file, but not store or portfolio pages.
- Hostinger exports pages, text and images to WordPress only; styles, store, forms and SEO settings stay.
- Shopify exports products as a CSV file, without images.
Your domain and your own copy of text and photos always go with you.

Tools
Quality score (1 to 5) averages four criteria: fit of the AI features for a small-business site; ease for a non-technical owner; portability (what you can export); and value at list price. Scores are Moon Set's editorial ratings, based on research into vendor pages read 2026-10-24, not hands-on tests.

When to hire instead
Hire help for booking tied to your calendar, a large store, forms that feed your CRM, or moving an existing site without losing search traffic.
Common mistakes
- Publishing the first draft. Invented prices and hours go live, and customers hold you to them.
- Fake proof. AI testimonials or photos posing as your work break trust and can break the FTC rule.
- Someone else owns the domain. If it's in a designer's name, moving later is slow or impossible.
- Ignoring lock-in. Not reading export rules, then rebuilding by hand.
- Chasing volume. Dozens of near-identical "service in [town]" pages, which Google's spam policy targets.
